Here you see the rear of the Fender Princeton 5F2-A.

You can access most of the components by simply removing the four screws that attach the top rear panel.

Rear Panel

With the panel removed, we get a good look at the guts of this classic, 5-watt guitar amp.

Panel Removed

All its electrolytic capacitors were the original Astron parts.

The caps are labeled with two voltage ratings.  The lesser rating (WVDC) is the maximum "working volts, DC".

The higher rating (VSP) is a surge value which is no longer used.  Modern caps are designed to withstand brief voltage surges of 10-15% above their maximum working voltage with no harm.

Eyelet Board with Original Caps

Here you see the four power-supply filter capacitors.

The two 16 microfarad (MF) caps on the left are wired in parallel to make a 32 MF "primary" filter cap, fed directly from the Princeton's rectifier tube.

The two 8 MF caps on the right belong to the amp's second and third stage filters.

The 2nd stage filter cap is fed through a 10kΩ 1W resistor.  The 3rd stage is fed through a 22kΩ ½W resistor.  These resistors can be seen at the bottom of this photo.

All four of the filter capacitors are rated at 450 volts.

Power Supply Filter Caps

Here, we've removed all the filter caps.

We snipped their leads at least a centimeter above the eyelet board and then unsoldered the eyelets.

Capacitor Removal

As you can see, other wires use the same solder eyelets.  Some of the wires come up from below.

Some of the old capacitor leads run under the eyelet board and connect to other eyelets.

That's why we didn't cut the capacitor leads close to the board.  They will be re-soldered to their eyelets.

Notice that we also took out the 10kΩ resistor.  It tested 13.4kΩ, significantly outside its 10% tolerance rating.

Wires, Jumpers, and Capacitor Leads

Here you see four newly installed filter caps and a newly installed 10kΩ resistor.
